Weekday Dinner Recipe: Taiwanese Minced Pork Sauce over Rice (肉燥飯)

Hello all, happy Wednesday, and Halloween night, hope you guys have a great Halloween night, be safe!!
Do you guys know what's that? YES, this is heavenly delicious. For me, all of Taiwanese dishes are scrumptious, and some what has the taste, that reminds me years ago when I actually ate this Minced Pork over rice in Taiwan. Basically, I love all dishes that have rice element in it, so as you can guess fried rice, rice over ....., everything that has rice below or on the side.
In Seattle, the city where I live in, sometimes it is hard to find a Authentic Taiwanese flavors, even though there are, it just too far for me to get there.. Hehehe, the only reason is I cannot drive, I only walk and take a bus, so I really depend on all kind of public transportations, and my brother and friends who can drive me there. The other reason is the weather doesn't make me willing to travel that distance only for getting food that I daydreaming about. (sometimes, I do daydreaming about food, and other stuffs too..) With this condition, I was trying to find the recipe for making Taiwanese Minced Pork Over Rice on foodgawker (the place that I'll spend hours only looking at desserts and foods, not that productive, and please don't be like me), luckily, I found it, and decided to experiment with that recipe..
Taiwanese Minced Pork Over Rice is an iconic Taiwanese Cuisine. This pork stew is extremely popular and can be found anywhere in Taiwan from homecooking, restaurants, to night marker street vendors. The aromatic sauce is served on rice or noodle, sometimes the rice or noodle can be found on the side or below the meat, in my country Indonesia, they sandwiched the meat within plain steam bun. Which also delicious.
It turned out the the dish is fairly easy to make at home. It also perfect for leftover, I said "perfect" cause I like to cook in big portion and store it in the fridge for days, perhaps weeks??.. I never tried to substitute the pork meat with other meat, but I guess, you will be fine if you substitute with other meat, I am thinking it would be nice to substitute it with tofu for vegetarian people. If you are veggie lovers, I do, you can add some or as many as you want in it, but I suggest do not go wild on veggies, they will seep the taste, which make your dishes has no taste in the end..
The recipe calls for complete ingredients and patience, in order to achieve the authentic and consistent Taiwanese cuisine taste. This particular recipe that I found in Yi's blog, required fried shallots and soy sauce paste, which were missing from today's experiment, well the taste was not off that much. But, I would love to try with those two ingredients, and see what is the difference, and I will touch on that when I do..  I believe you can find fried shallot and soy sauce paste on regular Asian Markets, or your local supermarkets, but definitely you must go to Asian Stores to get those.. If you want to try this recipe without those ingredients, you can always substitute with sauté handful of minced garlic, soy sauce or sweet soy sauce, and a little bit of sugar, in addition of the original recipe..
Recipe adapted from http://yireservation.com/
Taiwanese Minced Pork Sauce over Rice
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 1 hour, 15 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour, 25 minutes
Serving Size: 4

Ingredients:

Missing the Indonesian Sweet Soy Sauce, I use Bango Kecap Manis
  • 1 lb ground pork (or the meat of your choice)
  • 3 tbsp cooking wine
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce paste (can substitute with regular soy sauce or 2tbsp Bango Kecap Manis)
  • 1 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 cup pork broth or water
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 star anise
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 tsp five spice powder
  • 1 cup of fried shallot ( or garlic, like I did)
Instructions
  1. On a heavy skillet, add 1 tbsp of cooking oil and the minced pork over high heat. Stir the pork gently and constantly for about 4 minutes or until the pork turns slightly brown. Make sure your skillet is hot enough so you don’t lose the juice from the meat.
  2. Add broth/ water and mix in the five spice powder, star anise, bay leaf, soy sauce paste, dark soy sauce, cooking wine, black pepper, and sugar. Bring to boil and simmer over low heat for about 30 minutes. Stir occasionally.
  3. Grind the fried shallot with mortar and pestle into coarse powder.
  4. Add fried shallot to the meat sauce after 30 mins of simmering. Add salt if necessary. Continue to simmer for another 20 minutes. Thicken the meat sauce with some corn starch.
  5. Garnish with chopped scallion and serve the meat sauce over cooked rice or noodles or read of your choice.

Seems like it's a lot..
Okay, let's see how this recipe works, step by step:

On a big heavy skillet, as 1 tbsp of cooking oil and sauté the minced garlic until it is aromatic.  Add the minced pork over high heat. Stir the pork gently and frequently until the pork turns slightly brownish. Make sure your skillet is flaming hot, so you don't lose the juice from the meat..

In my case, I add water and add the five spice powder, star anise, bay leaf, dark soy sauce, Indonesian sweet soy sauce, cooking wine, black pepper, and sugar. (if you follow the original recipe, you need to add soy sauce paste, instead of Indonesian sweet soy sauce) Bring to boil and simmer over low heat for 30 minutes, do not forget stir occasionally, not constantly.

If you have fried shallot on hand, grind them with mortar. This is the time you will need to put your ground fried shallot in, also I add shitake mushrooms (to make it more tasty) and simmer for 30 minutes. Add salt if necessary, I like salty, so I add some salt. Add your veggies here, today I added chopped Nappa Cabbage in and continue to simmer for another 20 minutes. If you like thick texture sauce, add some corn starch until thicken as you desire.

Yummy! It really was..
Voila! It's ready to be serve. Garnish with green scallions and some veggies on the side like lettuce, broccoli florets over warm brown, white rice or noodle, pick one.
Hope you guys enjoy the recipe, and share with me how's the taste.. I would love to hear.. Comments are welcome.. Thanks to Yi, visit his blog for more step-by-step recipe..

Why Bother to Walk in High Heels?

As women there are many reasons to wear and be able to walk on high heels, the most common reason is they make you and me feel good! Wearing them may not a practical thing to do, aside from sacrificing our comfort walking in heels, they are surely make you (ugh, I don't know how to say it in words) they enhance our overall look, seriously they are sexy, even though only to look at.. They are truly work of art, if you will say..  To all flats mania like I used to be, here are the reasons you need to learn and start to love stilettos, wedges, and other high heels families...

They are Elegant
Christian Louboutin Lady-Daf Mary Jane

That's not me by the way, just a random pic I found in pinterest.com
One reason to wear high heels is they add more elegance to everything I am wearing. Even though, I only wear basics and twill pants, a pair of white wedges can changes the overall look into effortless elegance. Some outfits demands to matched with high heels, For say wearing a party dress with flats? That was only for kids. The heels not to be sky high heels like Louboutin's Daffodil pumps, wear what you are comfortable walk onto, starts with kitten heels like her :)

Oh, I'm Feeling Good..

I feel good when wear high heels, but I can't walk far enough in them. People like me on the short height, a pair of high heels can add the extra inches that I needed. For sure, it doesn't turn you to be Parisian supermodels, instantly, just add the height I really needed to gain more confidence.. With them I'm able to talk with taller people without hurting my neck. Oh, and that "clicking" sounds that I make, when I am walking, make me feel bossy. hehe..

They are Sexy

High heels are sexy, yes they are.. What kind of shoes that stylish, beautiful, sexy women on harper's bazaar cover magazine wearing? Mostly I find them wear that gorgeous high heels. However, we know   the power of the heels, that surely make guys go weak on your knees, cause they are too flirty and sexy.. Important thing to note, don't ever wear heels that make you taller than men, it can be a huge turn offs, they are offended too when you do that..

There are some reasons why I wanted to walk in pain, I mean high heels.. But you know that is life ups and downs, we need to have fun too, wearing high heels make us feel great and as you learn your feet and how to walk in right way from time to time, I will assure you it won't that hurt wearing them..  Here's one great video from Wendy, my fashion guru, she is so funny with the elevator thingy.. Oh also check out her blog too..

Comfy Shoes for College Student?

Tips for all gals college students out there..

As a college student, I really have a bad - bad schedule, I have class from morning till evening, how bad is that?? Running from one building to the other building on another side of school complex, really is a everyday workout. It got me thinking, why in the world do I need to put my feet in a pair of torment shoes while I need them to be able to walk everyday.. Hmm, here's come the thought, I need to invest in comfy shoes that keeps my feet and myself happy, from flats to boots that won't leave blisters and hurt my feet. The kicks that make me feet happy throughout the day..

Ballet Stretch Flats
Sam Edelman Felicia Flats is one of my favorite brands for comfy and stylish ballet flats. They have that puffy pad where our heels laid on. Which is so nice, add more comfort to walk across that avenues and squares with a dash of reptile skin on your feet. A versatile piece, great with skinnies and earthy tones outfits

Leather Booties

Leather booties are real deal for effortless chic style. They keep you feet warm and covered. This Fabrizia booties from UGG can be worn with chunky cable knit sweater with skinnies on rainy chilly days. It has they sheepskin lining, like the ones classic UGGs have. Super warm and super stylish!

Loafers

So long loafers, these kind of shoe style is directly borrowed from men shoes style. Which not a bad thing, women are so lucky cause we can go both ways masculine and feminine. There are so many of loafers style, the pointed, round, tassel style and so much more. But for my feet, they really love mocassin style loafers from Tory Burch. It has that flexibility, soft pebbled leather, and low cut shoe tongue. Cute, it completes my vintage school days look..

Sneakers

I think everybody really needs a pair of sneakers, (I have black low top and the oatmeal hi top). Converse Chuck Taylor makes my morning easier with it all-fit feature, seriously I can wear anything with sneakers. Another stylish approach from regular running shoes.

Military Boots

See how can a pair of military boots make your look become sporty? That are military-inspired boots from Palladium. They have ranges of style and materials, canvas to waterproof leather, you name it. A quite comfy, soft rubber sole, and warm kicks for cold days. They are good for adventurous or just regular walks.

Running Shoe

Heading to long fieldtrip journey? Don't worry, wear the actual running shoe to boost your mood while you walk.. It is true old story, when your feet are not happy, your mind also responded to that. By any means, you are going to be cranky as your feet blisters and being tortured with uncomfy shoes. So wear this bubble gum Nike free run sneakers, when you need to. They're also good for catching the bus too.

Flip-Flops

What if we have hot summer days? I definitely will go almost barefoot with this cute pink havaianas flip flops. Even though they are not as trendy as the other kicks, they are so damn comfortable. I will pull any color outfit with this pink flip-flops, even I have another flip-flops. I love this one better than another else, -hmm- I think there is one flip flop that is more sleeker than this one they are from splendid. Look, they comes with pink color too.. I am a big fan of any kind of pink colors. So yeah, pardon my excitement..

These are the list of kicks that will help you to hit your classes in comfortable and stylish way.. They are have its own cons and pros, and definetely you need to pick what kind of kicks that suits you and the weather too, don't ever wear flip-flops in cold and rainy day. It will ruin your feet and that is really a bad decision to make ( but I still do several times when I'm in hurry).

Make Your Thin Hair Look Thicker..

Confession: It has been long time, I suffer from acute hair loss problem, that contributes my slim-fragile hair. I mean, real serious, whenever I wash my hair, the shower's sewer clogged with my hair strands. Brushing and styling also become my nightmare, cause in every time I do those routine, I see my hair falling to the ground, and stuck tangled within my hair comb. They are terribly think, therefore, I am always looking for tips to make my hair at least look thicker, don't all we want is a thick lush hair? Thanks to the bloggers that shared their ideas, tips, and advices. I have gaining my hair -lopedia for months, and I have a list to make my hair look thicker. But, do I want to share? Of course I do, worry-free ways to make your hair look thicker...

Do not Over Brush

Left to Right: Aveda Invati hair scalp revitalizer, Lucido-L Water based Treatment Essence, Liese Hair Cocktail

It's in the contrary what most people tells you to do, even your own mother, it is never a good idea to brush your hair so often during the day and before you sleep. All that brushings won't make your thin hair to look thicker, instead, it will encourage the breakage and split ends and in my case, scratching my fragile scalp and stripping the oil needed for my hair follicles. When the oils stripped away, my hair starts falls from its roots. So, brush only as many as you need to just for detangle your hair and don't forget to apply some hair cocktails or serums to add vitamins to your hair, they also need supplements too.

Watch Out for SLES

Aveda Invati system
Aveeno all natural dry shampoo, a true hero for a day old hair
Before you buy a shampoo or any hair products, check the label behind the bottle to see if it contains dangerous chemical Sodium Laureth or Lauryl Sulfates. If so, or you use it, you may want to throw the remainder and stay away from them. Since these chemical compounds have been clinically proven to cause scalp irritation (which I suffer from) and even allergic reaction in hair loss.. Read here: The Disadvantanges of SLS -whoa, serious problem root is revealed- I mostly recommend organic, all natural derived hair products are the best, but again you can open your self to the various brands you might like. Personally, I am sticking to Aveda Hair Products, cause they have Invati system, the whole treatment for thinning hair from roots to tips of hair. Again, you can give them a try or you can find what's you gems out there.. I wash my hair every other day, with dry shampoo, I can withstand one more day.

Be Gentle When Using Hair Accesories

It is insanely important to use the right scrunchies, elastics, headbands, and pins for your hair, if your are wondering how those can diminish your hair. Always make sure to use cloth-covered elastics, headbands, and scrunchies, not that plain rubber, to avoid any breakage and damage. And, do not overly use these accessories if you think each strand of your hair is precious. Also do not overpull your hair back when you do your ponytail. It can pull your hair from it's roots or if you find yourself wanting to pull that tail, please do it gently, as well as, sticking in and pull out bobby pins.

Comb with Care

Do not comb your wet hair, cause the weakest point of your hair is when you hair is wet. How if your hair tangled and unruly fly aways? If you want to make you thin hair thicker, apply more conditioner and massage your scalp everytime you shampoo, towel it gently, do not scrub your hair. Then hair-dry the crown of the hair, lastly comb it with wide tooth comb to remove any tangles.

Hair Tonic

The blow up of first picture above..
Make thin hair thicker by simply applying hair tonic (any kind you like, but make sure it should be sulfate/SLS free) and gently massage into your scalp with your fingertips (NOT your fingernails). This will help stimulate hair growth with its gentle massage make our blood circulate up to our head.

Reduce the Heat

Your blow dryer, curling iron, straightener, and sun rays. All heat can make terrible damage for your hair. When possible, air dry your wet hair, rather that using a hair dryer, and whenever you use your heated styling tools, spray some heat protector or serums. I use Aveda pure abundace style prep, that will do double duties. Aside of providing me protection from head, it also give my weightless volume that all I have ever wanted..

Do not afraid, my hair-thin friend.. With these tips, it's possible for us to make our thin hair look thicker. I know these seem demanding, but you will never regret to follow these rules. They are absolutely work, no kidding.. I've passed the hard times, showing school with half-wet hair, stand up late to wait my hair dried whenever I washed my hair at night. But all the sacrifices paid its prices. My hair now look a bit thicker than usual.. If you cannot find my hair products in your country is okay, that's not the end of the world, my hair and yours are different, do not hesitate to give a try what products suit you.. Here's a peek of condition of my hair, you can see there how thin is it..

Review: Etude House Baking Powder Deep Cleansing Foam Moist

Hello again! I come back with more beauty product review, this time is a facial foam from Etude House. What image comes to mind when you hear baking powder facial foam? Skeptic enough, I was just thinking put some baking items on my skin. But it is not. It is just like any other facial foam that has some magic in it.

Who is here not lazy to take off your make up? I bet most of the girls out there, including myself do. I always excited to apply some make ups on my skin, but when it comes to remove it, I just trust facial soap to do it. Do not ever attempt what I do, cause for some people their skin are not tough enough to hold make up for a long time like me. As time passed by, my skin turned out blemished, dull and dried out. Since then I knew my bad habit was wrong.. Not removing make ups and let it lay on your skin for too long provoke wrinkles, aging, and blemishes. Therefore, from now on I always take off my make up either with cleansing milk or oils, cause I don't want to age in this early 20s.

When I was doing a window shopping, I saw this cute Etude House shop and my eyes were staring this Etude House Baking Powder Deep Cleansing Foam. As I read on, I found cool facts about this facial foam. "This facial foam is formulated with Baking Powder to penetrate and cleanse deep within pores to remove makeup and residues. With a rich, smooth foam lather for a moist sensation." Good thing to know this facial foam is dye free.

This is The Magic Facial Foam!

Whoa, immediately I snatched it from the shelves and bought it. Finally, I found my instant make up remover, really it is just all I need. When I got home, directly I gave this facial foam a shot and see is it work or not. The scent is lovely, which resembles lemon scent. Another fact, this product doesn't have any added fragrance, and you notice the smell when you actually sniffing the cream from the tube or when you're using it, so for those who is allergic to fragrance this would be okay to use it. Also, it doesn't have excessive foams and treats pore.

Applying the facial foam is easy too, it has thick texture but it spread easily on fingertips and face. It turns into thick foam when rubbed. Wet face first, and lather the foam on hands, then on your face in circular motion. You barely feel the Baking Powder contents inside the product. When you're done massaging, wash off with luke-warm water. It leaves your skin smooth, supple, and refreshed.

There's no make-up/BB cream residue left when I apply some toner
I dare to say this is my favorite facial foam ever, because of two things. First, it really (they're not lying) wash away my make up, whether it was BB cream or just any other make ups. Second, it leaves your skin soft and supple. A single use of this magic facial foam will do the work. My face feels wonderfully smooth and clean. The only thing this cannot do is, it won't work on waterproof eye makeups. Which I need to wipe it with eye remover.

There is no a single downside for using this product. I have been using this product for two weeks, everyday.. Still, it requires to apply some moisturizers afterward to prevent drying, I use toner and Kiehl's Pathenol Protein Cream to prevent drying skin.

Packaging wise, the tube is really cute with baby pink scheme, it doesn't come in a box, but instead well wrapped in a plastic. The tube contains 150ml, and it will last pretty long time. You don't need too much foam for washing the whole face, only a little blob size will do the work. Save up money.. Another thing, this is not pricey, I bought it for USD $6..

Over all it is an excellent facial foam that really do what they promised. I highly recommend this product :3 Thank you for reading my post
